As a single parent of a Black, dark-skinned male with tight curly hair, residing in Peel, the discrimination against our Black males especially is very loud in the school systems, services in our tax paying community centres is limited with access to programs, entry level part-time jobs are not accessible to them, and above all the police harassment blatant and subtle, that affects our boys negatively psychologically.
I was excited to access the supports from ResQ Youth International. This organization provided me with resources and contacts for educational and volunteer opportunities at outreach events which taught him valuable foundational lessons, emotional intelligence amongst many soft skills that equipped him to pursue higher education.
I remain an active member and share helpful resources received from their distribution list with parents of black children 0 - 25.
I really wished ResQ had mentorship supports for young Black adults navigating the world of careers, business and esteemed higher education. This is a gap I am realizing that is needed immensely, and hope that this could be an extension of their services.
